Executive Skills for Students

10 Week Syllabus

Week 1: Getting Started

  • Getting clear on your academic goals and connecting to the whys behind them

  • Creating your own “What happens if...” action plan with your coach (to be ready for the typical stumbling blocks students tend to encounter).

WHY? Over my many years of academic and executive skills coaching, I have seen time and again that the CLEARER students are on WHY they are committing to something, the more motivated, focused, and strategic they tend to be. This translates to better grades, faster completion of studies, and a whole lot fewer sweat and tears along the way.

Week 2: Study Spaces and Study Resources

  • Minimizing digital and environmental distractions (including body doubling)

  • Academic accommodations and other college resources

WHY? Many eligible students stear away from seeking formal academic accommodations that are available to them. This can be because of embarrassment, shame, overwhelm, task avoidance, and many other reasons. But there is an abundance of both formal and informal options out there that can make the difference between struggling or thriving. Learn more about what kind of discreet yet effective support is out there whether you’re diagnosed with a disability or not.

Week 3: Timing, Planning, and Scheduling

  • Anticipating length of time per task/assignment

  • Backwards planning from due dates

WHY? Another massive challenge for a lot of us out there is learning how to identify the smaller tasks within larger tasks (like projects, appointments, and events, among other things) so we can break down the bigger stuff into bite sized pieces, then correctly order, prioritize, and schedule them for when we actually need to do them.

Week 4: Using Calendars for Schoolwork - for REAL

  • Block scheduling as a student’s life saver

  • How to use apps, digital, and paper organizers and reminders (so they really work for you)

WHY? This kind of scheduling helps us visualize how much time tasks actually literally take up in our days, to help us better understand what we can commit to and when we need to say no. Helps for creating and reserving enough time to start and complete important tasks on time (among other things).

Week 5: Test Prep

  • Reading retention - what the heck did you just read??

  • Distraction recovery strategies that actually work

Week 6: Accurately Assessing Course Performance and Status from Week to Week

  • Calculating week-by-week course grades and why it helps to do this

  • Final grade projecting and what to do with your projections

  • Projecting GPA and why this is important

Week 7: Self-Advocacy and Professional Communication

  • How and when to ask for help, and how to be more ok asking for it! Recognize your needs and get them appropriately and quickly addressed to avoid more issues

  • How to follow up and follow through with tasks so stuff actually gets completed. Imagine!!

Week 8: Self-Care for Neurodivergent College Students

  • Sleep, food, medications, and physical movement: why, how, and what to expect

Week 9: Review

  • Review key components of last 8 weeks

  • Create your own cheat sheet of best practices to begin coaching yourself to graduation (or whatever your academic goals may be)!

Week 10: Self Assessment and Your Plan for Next Term
